Parent question 11+ route question Updated 26 May 2026

What is the difference between GL, CSSE and SET?

A parent-focused explanation of common 11+ route names, including GL Assessment, CSSE and the Sutton SET.

These names describe different things

Parents often see route names mixed together online. They do not all mean the same type of thing.

GL Assessment is a provider of assessment materials used by some grammar routes. CSSE is the Consortium of Selective Schools in Essex, which runs the Essex selective test route. SET is commonly used for the Sutton Selective Eligibility Test, a first-stage route for several Sutton-area schools.

Why the distinction matters

The practical question is not simply “is this GL?” or “is this CSSE?” It is: which schools does this registration cover, what subjects are tested, what result is reported, and what school policy applies after the result?

Example

A child preparing for one GL-style route may still need to register separately for a CSSE or Sutton route. The content may overlap in broad skills such as English and maths, but the registration, exam date, scoring, and school list can be different.

What parents should check

  • The official registration body for the route.
  • The schools covered by that route, using the 11+ route guides.
  • Whether the route has one stage or more than one stage.
  • The test subjects and result wording.
  • Whether the result can be used for one school, several schools, or a whole area.

Use route names precisely

Small naming errors can cause missed registrations. Treat GL, CSSE and SET as route-specific terms. Open the official route page before deciding which test your child needs.
