They measure different things
Attainment 8 is about GCSE achievement across a defined set of qualifications. Progress 8 compares pupil progress from earlier attainment to GCSE outcomes. The best GCSE results ranking is useful only when those measures are read alongside admissions and travel.
Grammar schools often have high attainment because pupils have already been selected academically. Progress figures can add context, but they still need careful reading.
Example
One grammar school may have a higher Attainment 8 score. Another may have a stronger Progress 8 score. That does not automatically make either one the better school for your child. The measures are answering different questions.
What to check beside results
- Admissions policy and realistic chance of an offer.
- GCSE subject pattern, not only the headline score.
- Sixth-form route if relevant.
- Journey time and reliability.
- Open-day evidence about teaching, support and culture.
The useful comparison
Use Attainment 8 to understand headline GCSE achievement. Use Progress 8 as context. Do not let either replace the admissions and daily-life checks in Compare.
