How do I compare two grammar schools?

A practical comparison method for parents choosing between two grammar schools.

Compare what can actually change your choice

Two grammar schools can look similar from a distance: selective entry, strong results, active pupils, good reputation. The useful comparison is usually more specific. Start with Compare, then use the school map and how to compare grammar schools guide to test the differences that matter.

Ask which school is more realistic, easier to reach and better matched to the child in front of you.

A simple comparison table

  • Admissions: which school is more likely to offer under the current policy?
  • Journey: which route works on a wet Tuesday in November?
  • Curriculum: which subjects and sixth-form options matter later?
  • Support: what happens if the child struggles?
  • Culture: what did pupils and staff show at the visit?

Example

One school has slightly stronger GCSE figures. The other has a shorter commute, a clearer route home after clubs and subject strengths that match the child. The comparison is no longer just about results.

Make the CAF decision explicit

Before ordering the two schools, write one sentence: “We prefer School A above School B because…” If the sentence only says “rank”, keep comparing. If the answer names admission chance, journey, subjects or support, the preference order is on firmer ground.
