Parent question 11+ route question Updated 26 May 2026

Do all grammar schools have creative writing?

Explains when creative writing appears in 11+ routes and why parents should check the named school's test format.

Test formats vary

Creative writing is not a universal 11+ subject. Some routes focus on English comprehension, maths, verbal reasoning or non-verbal reasoning. Others include writing, either as part of the main test or at a later stage. Compare the route detail for places such as CSSE, Kent and Sutton SET rather than assuming the same format applies everywhere.

The phrase “11+” can therefore hide a major preparation difference.

Example

A family considering one county route and one London school-specific route may find that the county test does not include the same writing task as the school route. Preparing only for the first route could leave a gap if the second route matters.

What to check

  • The test format for each named school or route.
  • Whether writing is marked for selection, used for moderation, or only considered later.
  • Whether the school has first-stage and second-stage tests.
  • Whether sample or familiarisation materials are published.
  • Whether writing tasks require story, description, summary, argument, or another format.

Keep preparation tied to the school list

Do not add creative writing practice just because another area uses it. Add it because a target route requires it, or because it supports wider English development. The official test format on the relevant route page should decide the priority.
