What should we do before CAF deadline?

A final CAF deadline checklist for parents applying to grammar schools and other secondary schools.

Final checks matter

The CAF is the form that turns research into preferences. A strong test result does not replace it, and test registration is not the same as applying for a school place. Use the grammar school admissions guide if those two steps still feel blurred.

The deadline is normally 31 October for secondary applications.

Before submitting, check

  • The schools are in your true preference order.
  • Each grammar school can use your child’s test route.
  • Each school policy has been read.
  • There is at least one realistic school you would accept.
  • Journeys have been tested on the school map or through a real school-run trial.
  • You have saved confirmation after submission.

Example

A family registers for an 11+ test and assumes that is enough. It is not. They still need to name schools on the CAF through the local authority process.

Keep proof

Save the confirmation email or screenshot with the submission date and reference number. If there is a portal problem later, proof of submission matters.
