What does a Kent Test score mean?

How to read a Kent Test result without confusing assessment outcome, school eligibility and final allocation.

Read the result in two layers

The first layer is the Kent Test assessment outcome: whether the child has been assessed suitable for grammar school in the Kent process. The Kent Test score explainer gives the route-specific score context.

The second layer is school allocation. Once preferences are submitted, each named school still has to apply its admissions policy. Some Kent schools are heavily oversubscribed, and distance or other priority rules can matter.

Example

A child receives a Kent Test result showing they are assessed suitable for grammar school. The family can name Kent grammar schools on the CAF, but the final offer depends on the schools named, the order of preference, available places and each school’s oversubscription criteria.

What to check after the result

  • Whether the result is suitable for grammar school.
  • Any component scores or minimum-score wording in the result guidance.
  • The admissions policy for each Kent grammar school you may name.
  • Distance, priority area and travel.
  • The CAF deadline for your home local authority.

The safest reading

A Kent Test score helps you decide which schools remain possible. It should not be used alone to decide the CAF. Pair it with the Kent grammar schools guide, each school policy and a realistic journey check.
