If the result says non-grammar
Medway says you may still apply to a grammar school, with realistic non-grammar preferences alongside it. A grammar refusal in the normal allocation creates a route to an independent admission appeal. The test result and the school refusal are separate decisions.

The school decision
After refusal, an appeal panel can consider the case for admission, including the required academic standard where relevant. Follow the named school’s appeal instructions.
Read the official result guidance and keep the complete result. If you believe an administrative problem occurred, record the details and correspondence. Raising an enquiry does not replace the secondary application or a later appeal submission.
If the result says grammar suitable but the school is full
Qualification allows consideration; it does not reserve a place. Check the school’s oversubscription criteria, the category applied to your child and the refusal reason. A score, distance or priority rule may affect offers, but the relevant rule is the one in that school’s published entry-year policy.
For a child who qualified, the case may concern the application of admissions rules or reasons for admission despite the school’s capacity case. For a non-qualified child, academic suitability also matters. The DfE guidance explains the distinction.
