Before offers: read the score against a school
The same CSSE result can be used by schools with different entry requirements and allocation rules. Read it with the admission policy for the exact school and September 2027 entry. The CSSE score guide explains why an examination result, qualifying requirement and last-offered score are different things.
CSSE explicitly separates its examination role from school applications and appeals. Test registration is not the school application. Name the schools through your home authority’s CAF and keep any supplementary information required by a school with the application record.
After a refused place
Use the refusal to identify the appeal administrator. Living in one authority does not mean that authority hears appeals for a school in another area.
Essex schools
Essex provides an online route for many schools. If the named school is absent from the list, contact it directly. The council’s visible secondary timetable currently concerns 2026 entry, so use the current refusal for your 2027 deadline.

Use the school’s instructions and Southend’s secondary guidance. The 2027 offer-day FAQ lists 13 April for an on-time appeal. Check the appeal pack and separate evidence cutoff for the named school.
Southend official guidance ↗Keep the offered place while you appeal. Follow your home authority’s response instructions and any separate waiting-list procedure. An appeal outcome is uncertain and does not itself hold another school place open.

- Chelmsford
- King Edward VI Grammar School. Check the school’s eligibility, priority and allocation rules before preparing the grounds of appeal.
- Southend
- Southend High School for Boys and Southend High School for Girls. Use the named school’s current appeal instructions alongside council guidance.
- Westcliff
- Westcliff High School for Boys and Westcliff High School for Girls. Keep each refused place, form and deadline separate.

What your evidence needs to address
- Below the school’s academic requirement
- Explain the academic evidence relevant to the required standard. Where circumstances affected the test, document the connection. A small score shortfall does not automatically establish suitability.
- Qualified, but not high enough under the allocation rules
- Read the criterion applied and identify any factual or processing error. Explain the school-specific reasons for admission where the appeal turns to balancing your case against the school’s capacity case.
Southend’s FAQ says a primary-school letter is not required for its appeals and school reports can support a selective case. That is a useful reminder to follow the local instructions rather than treating one generic document list as compulsory everywhere.
- Retain the full record: CSSE result, CAF receipt, refusal and entry-year policy.
- Label supporting documents and link each one to a point in the statement.
- Record the lodging and evidence deadlines from the actual appeal pack.
- Prepare a separate case for each school, even where the same test result is involved.

A few things parents ask
Do I send my school admission appeal to CSSE?
No. CSSE explicitly says its office administers the examination and is not involved in school applications, admissions or appeals. Follow the named school’s appeal instructions.
Does the Essex appeal portal cover every CSSE school?
No. Essex says most schools in its area can be appealed through its online route, but parents should contact a school if it is not listed or is outside Essex. Southend schools have their own published arrangements.
Is a primary-school letter required for a Southend appeal?
Southend’s official FAQ says a primary-school letter is not required and school reports may be used as academic evidence for a selective appeal. Follow the instructions for the school and administrator handling the case.
Does a historical CSSE cut-off guarantee a future place?
No. A historical allocation score describes a previous cohort and policy context. Read the current school’s eligibility and oversubscription rules, including any geographical or priority category.
