Wycombe Abbey

Wycombe Abbey's identity is inseparable from its founder, Dame Frances Dove, and from the idea that girls should be prepared to take an active place in the world. Founded in 1896, the school began at Loakes Manor and grew into a girls' boarding community on a large High Wycombe estate. Its heritage is visible in the buildings and grounds, but the more enduring legacy is a culture that joins academic ambition with service, judgement, independence and responsibility.

The curriculum is designed to keep intellectual possibilities open before pupils begin to specialise. In the younger senior years, girls study languages, humanities, sciences, creative subjects, computing, drama and music alongside physical education and wellbeing. GCSE choices are not confined to predetermined blocks, and the Sixth Form timetable is built around individual A Level combinations. That flexibility matters at a school where a pupil's interests may range from classical languages to design, science, history or the performing arts.

Academic life continues beyond examination courses. The Carrington Programme brings enrichment, research, leadership, careers and personal development into the Sixth Form, with the Extended Project Qualification and University Preparation Project offering room for sustained independent work. Boarding is the organising rhythm of Wycombe Abbey rather than an add-on to a day-school model. Girls live in houses, move into greater independence as they progress and take part in a community that continues through the Sixth Form.
