Overview

Woldingham’s boarding life is shaped by the goals of a Sacred Heart education and by a strikingly varied residential community. Three quarters of pupils are British, while international boarders come from more than 30 countries. In the Surrey countryside, 30 minutes from London by train, music, drama, sport and weekend activities are woven into the boarding week.

Its academic approach, called empowered learning, is teacher-led while placing independent thinking at the centre. Years 7 and 8 take the two-year Marden Diploma before GCSE study begins in Year 9. The 2025 results included half of A-level grades at A*/A, more than 80% at A*-B, and half of GCSE results at grades 9-8; scholars and high achievers also have dedicated enrichment and competitions.

The purpose-built Sixth Form Centre combines a collaborative zone, silent study space, cafe, classrooms, lecture theatre and whole-school library. Most students take three of the 26 A levels alongside Horizon, a lecture-and-seminar programme concerned with critical thinking, intellectual maturity and moral awareness. Business networking, public speaking, STEM Solutions, debating and accredited student leadership bring different kinds of work into the two years.

Boarding changes as pupils move through the school. Marden House is for Years 7 to 9, Main House is for Years 10 and 11, and Berwick and Shanley houses are for Sixth Formers. Full boarders can remain for weekends, weekly boarders stay up to five nights, and day pupils may flexi-board for up to three nights, so residence can be a continuing part of school life rather than a single arrangement.
