Overview

William of Wykeham founded Winchester College in 1382 to educate 70 scholars. That medieval foundation still has a living presence: ceremonies mark the school year, its own vocabulary survives in daily use, and College remains the boarding house for academic Scholars. Full boarding makes those shared customs part of ordinary life rather than a historical backdrop.

Div gives the academic programme its most distinctive thread. Alongside examined subjects, pupils undertake this cultural and philosophical course; in Year 9 it sits with mathematics, sciences, languages, humanities and creative subjects. Sixth Formers normally take three A levels with Div and can add an Extended Project Qualification for deeper independent research.

The house system brings pupils of different ages together outside lessons. Early-morning rowing on the River Itchen, evening talks, house competitions and shared study all grow from that residential rhythm. Art has its own substantial facilities for printmaking, sculpture, painting, drawing and ceramics, while societies bring visiting thinkers and specialists into the week.

The Sixth Form is changing the shape of the community without abandoning its residential core. Day pupils belong to a boarding house, and from September 2026 the first girl boarders will move into two purpose-built houses. Boys and girls in the Sixth Form share the academic programme and dedicated afternoon time for clubs, societies and other pursuits.
