Wells Cathedral School

Wells Cathedral School has a long chorister tradition, but its musical identity sits within a broader co-educational day and boarding community. Pupils follow academic, creative and sporting interests alongside specialist musicians, creating a school in which performance is important without being the only route through the senior years. The senior curriculum spans the arts, sciences and humanities. The specialist music route is available to musicians aged 8 to 18. Applicants can submit performance examples through an event or video clips before an audition covering prepared and unprepared performance, aural work and musical understanding. Grades and examination results are not required, so the audition focuses on musicianship and potential rather than a single formal qualification.

Boarding houses are close to Wells city centre, with common rooms, gardens and inter-house activities shaping residential life. Specialist musicians live alongside pupils following other paths, which is central to the school's character. The April 2026 inspection outcome recorded the relevant standards as met, adding a recent external reference point to a school best known for bringing cathedral music, boarding and a full academic programme together.
