Overview

Wakefield Girls' High School is the girls' junior, senior and Sixth Form route within Wakefield Grammar School Foundation. From September 2026, the Foundation's three schools are planned to come together as Wakefield Grammar School in a co-educational diamond model; until then, the existing route remains for pupils aged 7 to 18.

The academic journey broadens as pupils move through the school. Years 7 to 9 combine English, mathematics, sciences and humanities with languages, computing, art, drama, music, philosophy and religion, food and nutrition and sport. Spanish or German and classical civilisation or Latin provide further choices, while Years 10 and 11 add personal options to a common core.

Relationships and confidence sit alongside subject knowledge. Junior pupils are encouraged to express ideas inventively, while specialist teachers support older students as they build independence and academic direction. The Sixth Form continues that pattern through small teaching groups, pastoral care, leadership opportunities and dedicated spaces. In 2025, 45% of GCSE grades were at 9 to 7.

More than 100 activities extend life beyond lessons across sport, music, drama, trips, service and leadership, linked to the Pathways To Success programme. From September 2026, primary and Sixth Form are planned to become co-educational, while teaching from 11 to 16 remains single sex. The school's character lies in that combination of established girls' education and a defined transition ahead.
