Overview

Re-engagement is at the heart of Urban Mission School's work with young people for whom conventional education has been difficult. The Lewisham setting grew from a local church group's support for pupils in 2003 and now serves mixed pupils aged 11 to 16 in a small route without boarding or a Sixth Form.

UMS organises learning around a Thinking Curriculum, connecting English and mathematics with history, geography, science, IT, citizenship, media and humanities. Relevant applications, cross-curricular projects, trips, outside speakers and residentials sit alongside presentation, collaboration and personal-development skills. Functional Skills qualifications and GCSE opportunities are available in some subjects.

Small classes and consistent staff groups are supported by teachers, therapists, psychologists and mentors. Counselling, speech and language work, art, Lego and music therapy sit beside learning support. The behaviour approach considers the reasons behind a pupil's response, combining trauma-informed practice, clear boundaries and individual goals.

College placements, work experience and careers activity become part of the route when pupils are ready. Christian values are expressed through community, communication, character, capability and creativity. UMS therefore joins re-engagement, therapeutic support and practical progression in a deliberately small setting.

Key points

Assessment route
Applications are made directly to the school. Check the school's own admissions pages for registration dates, entrance assessment stages, interviews, fees, scholarships and bursaries.
Places and demand
Published Year 7 place numbers and applicant-per-place data are not included in GIAS for this private-school seed profile.
Catchment
Private-school eligibility is not controlled by the local-authority grammar catchment model; check boarding, day-pupil, transport and any sibling or faith rules on the school site.
Results
Independent-school performance data is patchier in official releases, so GCSE and A-level comparisons should be checked against the school's published results.
