Individual design is the starting point at Unique Children's School, a very small mixed setting for pupils aged 11 to 18. Its work is centred on children who may have spent long periods outside education and who have complex special educational needs, including social, emotional and mental health difficulties.
Each pupil follows a curriculum shaped around prior learning, with regular assessment refining teaching and support. Individual plans are reviewed with staff, families, pupils and relevant experts. The setting gives pupils a calm, warm environment in which their views can shape learning, behaviour and personal development.
Reading is supported through books, bookshop and library visits, with texts chosen around individual interests. Personal development connects learning to work experience, educational visits and social-skills activities, including learning to use London transport. Staff also support college applications and careers exploration.
This is a highly individual route through secondary and post-16 learning. Carefully adjusted teaching, confidence-building and practical preparation carry as much weight as the timetable, allowing pupils to reconnect with education while keeping future study, work and independence in view.
