Summerhill School

Summerhill began in 1921 with A. S. Neill's insistence that children should make choices and grow at their own pace. That principle still shapes the mixed community: classes are optional, and pupils can attend or not while staff provide individual learning. Day pupils and boarders share the same setting, with registered provision from ages 5 to 18 and a sixth form.

The curriculum is deliberately flexible rather than organised through National Curriculum year groups. Its outlines include mathematics, English, literature, science, ICT, modern foreign languages, art, music and history through GCSE level, but attendance and progression are not forced into a conventional sequence. The school meeting is central to community life and to the way shared decisions are made.

Learning extends beyond a fixed subject list. Individual study, play and project work sit alongside academic lessons, with examples including psychology, another modern foreign language, advanced metalwork, music, gardening, debating and philosophy. Social and emotional development carries equal weight with academic learning, so pupils' choices influence both what they study and how they participate.

Enrolment is handled directly. Day pupils can start from age 5, while children are not normally eligible to start as boarders if they are older than 11 at the beginning of term. Its freedom-with-boundaries model depends on the community's shared expectations.
