Overview
A 1916 move to the Hallam site and the beginning of co-education in 1980 mark two turning points in Stockport Grammar School's long history. The present co-educational community runs from the early years through Sixth Form as a day provision for pupils aged 3 to 18, with academic departments, sport, arts and pastoral life closely connected.
Sixth Form combines small classes, specialist teaching and tailored support with room for sporting, musical and theatrical interests. In the senior years, History develops analysis, argument and research, including local history and visits in Britain and abroad. The academic experience therefore has both a specialist edge and a broad cultural reach.
Sport is organised around participation and competition. Rugby, football, hockey, netball, cricket, tennis and athletics sit alongside PE lessons and co-curricular teams, with a swimming pool, climbing wall, sports hall and all-weather pitch supporting the programme. These facilities make physical activity a regular part of the week rather than an occasional extra.
Pastoral support brings together heads of section and year, form tutors, school nurses, counsellors and Sixth Form mentors. Bursary and scholarship routes sit within admissions. On Buxton Road in Stockport, the combination of early-years continuity, senior academic work, sport and personal support gives the community its particular shape.
