St Michael's School

Learning, virtue and religious formation are inseparable at St Michael's School, a small Catholic community in the countryside near Newbury. Its tradition is rooted in the teachings and liturgy of the Roman Catholic Church and in the Society of St Pius X, which owns and operates the provision. Boys board from Year 7, while the wider age range runs from 5 to 18 across primary, prep, secondary and Sixth Form stages.

The grounds of fields, woods, a chapel, recreation areas and sports fields give the education a physical setting. Secondary pupils study English, mathematics, biology, chemistry, physics, history and French, alongside Latin, geography, Religious Knowledge and PE. Key Stage 3 is spread across three years to build understanding without cramming; Sixth Form A Levels, catechism and Catholic philosophy are offered subject to demand.

Admissions require a family statement, parent and pupil interview, entrance assessment, a report from the current or previous school and confirmation that a suitable place is available. Families are expected to support the Catholic ethos. Boarding combines supervised study, prayer, recreation, house duties and outdoor activity, with a small residential community supported by staff and the wider life of the school.

Primary and prep education includes boys and girls, while the secondary path is for boys from Year 9 onwards. That division gives the 5-18 journey a clearly defined progression. The distinctive combination of faith, boarding and character formation is carried through the academic timetable and the routines of the residential community.
