Overview

St Edmund's School in Hindhead has built its present character over a long, gradual history. The school became fully co-educational in 2008, added its Senior School in 2014 and marked its 150th anniversary in 2024. Nursery, Prep and Senior pupils share an independent day-school community in which tradition sits alongside openness, curiosity and close attention to individual character.

The Senior School uses small teaching groups and close knowledge of pupils to support GCSE study. Digital learning and Saturday clinics add to the academic week, while discussion and independent thinking are treated as part of everyday work rather than something reserved for older students. Because the school begins in the early years, the senior phase retains a sense of continuity even as pupils move into more demanding courses.

Pastoral care has a practical centre in The Burrow, a space where Prep and Senior pupils can pause, reset and regulate before returning to lessons. Tutors, heads of year and academic, sports and support staff add a wider network around that provision. Sport, the Duke of Edinburgh's Award and other activities extend the week while keeping the scale of the community manageable.

Entry is available through Nursery, Reception, Form 3 at 7+, Form 7 at 11+ and Form 9 at 13+, with other year groups considered when places exist. Visits, taster sessions, assessments, scholarships and bursaries form part of the direct application process. The 2 to 16 route ends with Future Schools guidance for pupils preparing for the next stage after GCSE study.
