St Albans High School for Girls

Three stages, two settings and a girls-only education define the shape of STAHS. St Albans High School for Girls brings together Prep, Senior and Sixth Form provision for ages 4 to 18, with the Senior School on Townsend Avenue and the Prep School in Wheathampstead. It is selective, has no boarding and includes a registered sixth form.

Years 7 and 8 provide a broad base across sciences, mathematics, languages, humanities, creative subjects, computing, music, drama, design and physical education. In Year 9, pupils choose five electives alongside core study. Most take ten GCSEs, with English language, English literature, mathematics and science at the centre; the majority take separate biology, chemistry and physics.

Sixth Form combines A levels with the STAHS Diploma, alongside small classes and guidance for applications to universities in the UK and overseas, including Oxbridge, medicine, veterinary and dentistry routes. Selection uses online vocabulary, mathematics and non-verbal reasoning assessments, a written critical-thinking and communication task, and interviews for selected candidates. Offers carry subject-specific GCSE conditions.

Sport, music, drama, House activities, chess and the Duke of Edinburgh's Award extend the curriculum beyond lessons. Main entry points are Reception, Year 3, Year 7, Year 9 and Year 12, with occasional places considered where vacancies arise. Scholarships cover academic work, sport, music and drama, and means-tested bursaries are available; the coach network reaches Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire and North London.
