Shrewsbury School

Floreat is the idea at the heart of Shrewsbury School: deep learning in a challenging but kind environment, with character and life skills developed alongside academic work. Founded by King Edward VI in 1552, the co-educational day and boarding community brings that whole-person model into a distinctly senior-school setting.

Serious fun is the college's shorthand for the balance between lessons and communal life. A wide curriculum is joined by sport, music, performing arts, societies, volunteering, pastoral care and the houses. Day pupils and boarders share the same community, while residential life gives the senior years an additional structure.

The main senior intake is the Third Form at 13, with a smaller Fourth Form entry at 14 for the two-year GCSE course. The Sixth Form also welcomes pupils from other schools. For Year 12, the entry route includes written assessments in nominated subjects, an interview and a reference from the current headteacher.

Those formal entry points at 13, 14 and 16 sit alongside a long history and an extensive programme beyond lessons. The result is a school built around senior study, shared activities and house life, with the Sixth Form providing a later route into the same community.
