Full boarding gives Sedbergh School its distinctive rhythm. Founded in 1525 by Roger Lupton, the co-educational senior community now serves ages 13 to 19 in the Cumbrian town between the Yorkshire Dales and the Lake District. Historic buildings and boarding houses remain part of the setting, while the current model is built around seven days of shared life.
Classes sit beside House activities, sport, music, service and outdoor learning. House staff, tutors and matrons share responsibility for support, giving pupils a smaller base within the wider community and encouraging independence. Boarding is therefore the framework through which education, activity and pastoral life are joined.
The current Front Four brings together Compass, Service, Pathways and Spirit. Pathways links ambitions to university, careers and apprenticeships, while the wider programme makes room for leadership, music and outdoor experiences. Rugby, introduced at Sedbergh in 1879, remains part of the institution's sporting history.
Five centuries of history are being marked alongside a present emphasis on curiosity, resilience, kindness and confidence beyond the campus. The senior provision is co-educational and includes a Sixth Form, but the age range and boarding context remain distinct from the separate prep-school route.
