Sandwell Valley School

Re-engagement defines Sandwell Valley School's alternative-provision model. Opened in 2016, the co-educational setting is designed for young people who need a smaller, more supportive route back into education. The age range is currently given as both 11 to 18 and 11 to 19, including a Sixth Form, so placements for the oldest year group need direct confirmation.

Trauma-informed teaching links the curriculum to individual support. English, mathematics and science sit alongside STEM, creative and performing arts, PSHE, physical education, food technology and ICT. Confidence, motivation and emotional security are treated as practical conditions for learning, not as separate additions to it.

Pupils can follow GCSE, Functional Skills or Nurture pathways, with elements combined where appropriate. Functional Skills focuses on practical English, mathematics and ICT, while the flexible structure can be adjusted to a pupil's needs, strengths and goals. The available route therefore depends on the learner rather than a standard annual sequence.

Admissions are for in-year placements rather than a conventional yearly independent-school round. A local authority or feeder school may make the application, followed by an interview covering the setting, facilities and additional needs. There is no boarding, so the model described here is built around planned daytime support and placement decisions.
