Overview

Roedean began with ten pupils in Wimbledon House, where the Lawrence sisters opened their school in Kemp Town in 1885. The move to Roedean Way in 1898 established the coastal setting associated with its continuing ambition for girls' intellectual, physical and cultural education. That origin story still gives the senior school a stronger sense of place than a generic boarding model.

Academic entry is selective, while the wider programme includes sport, music, theatre, visual arts and other co-curricular work. Sixth-form students follow A levels alongside supra-curricular courses, practical projects, lectures and clubs. The intention is to build independence and curiosity around examination study rather than treat qualifications as the whole of school life.

Boarding is integrated through full, weekly and flexi arrangements. Sixth-form boarders have individual study bedrooms and use the Sixth Form Centre and house spaces, while the Brighton campus includes a theatre, chapel, sports facilities and dedicated sixth-form areas. Day pupils remain part of the same academic and co-curricular community.

The admissions route includes entrance examinations, interview, references and review of attainment. Visits are offered for 11+ and 13+ applicants, with sixth-form conversations providing a separate opportunity to understand the next stage. Roedean therefore combines a precise selective entry process with several ways for girls to experience the day and boarding community before joining.
