A 1591 royal charter still provides the historical starting point for Queen Elizabeth Grammar School. The present Foundation identity is Queen Elizabeth's School, Wakefield, created from QEGS, Wakefield Girls' High School and Wakefield Grammar Pre-Preparatory School. It brings a day-school community and Sixth Form into a structure that has changed while keeping its long institutional memory.
The diamond model makes academic lessons single-sex from ages 11 to 16, while pastoral care, co-curricular activity, PSHE and social time are co-educational. Pupils come together in a fully co-educational Sixth Form, where 26 A Level subjects sit alongside the EPQ, Finance Qualifications and more than 100 activities.
Visits and Open Doors events lead into age-specific assessment. Year 7 applicants take English, mathematics and non-verbal reasoning papers; later senior entrants complete English, mathematics and science assessments with an interview. Sixth Form applicants discuss subjects and aspirations, attend a taster day and provide predicted grades and a reference. The December 2025 inspection found the relevant standards met.
