Penarth Group School

Penarth Group School is designed for young people aged 11 to 18 who have found mainstream education difficult to sustain. Its co-educational specialist provision includes support for pupils with special educational needs, social, emotional and mental health difficulties, mild learning difficulties and looked-after children. Sixth-form places are available, and the non-boarding setting keeps the focus on rebuilding engagement in daily education.

The curriculum follows the National Curriculum while adapting learning to age, ability and individual needs. English, mathematics, science, art, ICT, life skills, sport, outdoor education, PSHE, French and design technology are joined by later-stage options. Education, wellbeing, social re-engagement and personal development are supported through drama, music, mindfulness, martial arts and bespoke therapeutic help.

Referrals can come from local authorities, schools or parents. The process starts with a conversation with the Headteacher or Senior Leader for Pastoral, followed by a visit, document exchange and meeting with the young person and parent or carer. Funding is discussed before an integration meeting finalises arrangements, and each student receives a key worker to support confidence, participation and progress.

That combination of flexible teaching and close pastoral organisation gives Penarth a clear role for pupils who need a more individual route back into learning. The emphasis is practical: adapt the curriculum, understand the young person, and connect education with wellbeing, social participation and the next stage.
