Overview

Pangbourne College began in 1917 as the Nautical College, Pangbourne, founded by Sir Thomas Lane Devitt to prepare Merchant Navy officers while providing a broader education. It adopted its present name in 1969 and became co-educational in 1996. That naval inheritance remains part of the character of a community now serving girls and boys aged 11 to 18 through day and boarding places.

Four pillars - Academic Rigour, Exploration, Community and Leadership - shape the educational offer. Years 7 to 9 include a varied curriculum and Core Skills work in independent learning, time management, research and forward planning. GCSE and sixth-form study then sit alongside societies, lectures, field trips and opportunities to apply ideas beyond the classroom.

More than 230 acres of Berkshire countryside near the River Thames form the setting for daily life. Boarding can be full, weekly for up to six nights, part-time for four nights or limited and occasional for day pupils. From September 2025, four senior divisions became co-educational while separate boys' and girls' boarding houses were retained, preserving both shared and house-based parts of the community.

The usual entry points are Year 7, Year 9 and the sixth form, with other years dependent on availability. Applications use the College's registration process, and regulatory standards were met in January 2024. Pangbourne therefore combines a specific maritime history with flexible residential patterns, a broad senior curriculum and a current co-educational structure.
