Newcastle High School for Girls GDST

Two earlier Newcastle girls' schools provide the foundation for Newcastle High School for Girls: one dates from 1872 and the other from 1876, before their 2014 merger brought the present school together. That history still informs the school's all-girl character. Membership of the Girls' Day School Trust places pupils in a local community while also giving them access to opportunities and connections that extend across the trust.

The senior years are deliberately broad before pupils begin to narrow their choices. In Years 7 to 9, English, mathematics, separate sciences and humanities sit alongside two modern languages, Classics, physical education, dance, drama, art and music. GCSE study can therefore grow from a wide base, while the Sixth Form adds deeper subject work and independent enquiry for pupils preparing for university, employment and adult life.

The Jesmond senior setting brings together specialist teaching, pastoral care and activities beyond the timetable. An all-girl environment gives pupils room to test interests, take responsibility and lead without having to negotiate assumptions about which subjects or roles belong to them. That is complemented by the GDST network, which adds experiences beyond the Newcastle campus without replacing its own identity.

Newcastle High is a girls' day school spanning the early years to 18, with sixth-form study available on the same educational journey. Its strongest thread is continuity: a long local history, a broad academic programme and a trust structure that gives the school a larger horizon while keeping everyday school life centred on its own pupils and staff.
