Overview

Founded in 1785 by Quakers Esther and William Tuke, The Mount School York carries its origins into a distinct educational ethos: simplicity, truth, equality, peace, social justice and sustainability. Co-education runs from pre-school to Year 1, followed by girls' education from Year 2 through Year 13, within a 2-to-18 day and boarding community.

From Year 7 to sixth form, pupils study STEM, humanities, modern languages and creative arts. Years 7 to 9 include art, Latin, drama, geography and history alongside the core; GCSE pupils add optional subjects around English, mathematics, a modern foreign language and science. The prep school's Explore, Discover, Create curriculum gives younger pupils regular opportunities to present and share their work.

One boarding house in the main building offers full, weekly and flexi boarding with clear routines, supervision and communication. Weekly silent meetings, school and food councils, Model United Nations and charity work turn the Quaker emphasis into lived practice. Boarding remains available alongside day places.
