Founded in 1935 after R. J. O. Meyer returned from India with seven Indian boys, Millfield grew into a co-educational senior school in 1939. That international beginning still feels relevant to a community where day pupils and boarders share the same matches, concerts, plays and house life.
The academic route is deliberately staged. Year 9 keeps the programme broad; GCSE pupils take English Language and Literature, mathematics, science and PSHEE, usually alongside a modern foreign language and a choice of options. Sixth Form students can follow A levels or BTEC routes in areas including Business, Art and Design and Sport, with specialist art, physics, music and sports facilities supporting the breadth.
Boarding is part of the senior model rather than an add-on. Around three quarters of pupils are full boarders living in 19 houses on or near the campus, with weekend activities, resident house staff, medical care and counselling. The senior route serves ages 12 to 19 and includes a sixth form; applicants can enter through the 13-to-18 route or apply for Sixth Form courses and boarding places.
