Overview

Michael Hall School grew from a group led by Daphne Olivier after a 1923 Rudolf Steiner education conference. It began in south London, moved to Kidbrooke Park after the Second World War and took the name Michael Hall. That history still explains the school's Steiner Waldorf identity, now carried through a mixed 2-to-19 provision with a Sixth Form and no boarding.

The timetable is organised around the Waldorf Main Lesson: the first two hours of each morning focus on one subject for a three- or four-week block. Intellectual work is deliberately joined to art, craft and practical experience, so pupils can stay with an idea long enough to explore it through different forms rather than moving immediately between short periods.

Eurythmy, music, watercolour, woodwork, metalwork, ceramics, gardening, bushcraft and languages sit alongside science and the later examination route. GCSE and A-level study are available within the Steiner Waldorf curriculum, preserving the school's distinctive artistic and practical character as pupils move towards formal qualifications.

Admissions begin with a visit or tour, and applications are accepted throughout the year except for the Kindergarten's term-based entry points. Children are normally seen by class teachers or guardians, with wellbeing and inclusion staff involved where appropriate before a place is offered. The process reflects the importance of understanding the child and the educational approach together.
