Merchant Taylors' School

Merchant Taylors' School traces its history to the Worshipful Company of Merchant Taylors' foundation in 1561 and the move from the City to Northwood in 1933. That long institutional memory now supports a boys' day-school journey from 11 to 18, with a Sixth Form and no boarding. The historic connection is still part of the identity, but the modern experience is organised around a clear academic and co-curricular rhythm.

Academic life moves from breadth to depth. In the Middle School, English, mathematics, the three sciences and a modern foreign language form part of the I/GCSE core. Subject choices are made in Year 9 with guidance before the GCSE curriculum begins in the summer term, while the Sixth Form provides A-level study.

Sport, music and drama anchor a wide programme beyond lessons. The CCF, Duke of Edinburgh's Award, trips, clubs, societies and VEX Robotics give different routes into teamwork, performance, service, making and academic curiosity. Entry is selective and direct. At 11+, candidates sit English, mathematics and the Merchant Taylors' General Paper, followed by a short online test. Sixth Form entry has its own registration, reference, assessment and interview route, with scholarships and bursaries within the admissions calendar. The day-school structure and age-specific assessment make the intended point of entry central to the application.
