The Maynard School

The Maynard School's history reaches back to 1658, and that long Exeter connection now frames a continuous day-school journey for girls from Reception to Year 13. Drama, music, sport and pastoral care sit alongside academic work, while the absence of boarding keeps the experience centred on a shared daily community. The result is a through-school identity with a clear sense of place and continuity.

The Years 7 to 9 curriculum includes classics, computing, drama, modern languages, religious studies, food and nutrition and textiles, giving pupils room to move between analytical, creative and practical disciplines. The Sixth Form offers 23 A-level subjects, with classes averaging six to 12 pupils. Small teaching groups allow individual teachers to tailor support to each pupil's strengths and areas for development.

That breadth continues into a senior phase where subject choice is taken seriously rather than treated as an administrative step. The combination of languages, classical study, performance, technology, textiles and food gives the middle years a distinctive texture, while the Sixth Form scale supports close academic attention as pupils prepare for their next stage.

The 11+ and 13+ routes use formal entrance assessments. For Year 7, the January assessment day covers English, comprehension, mathematics, verbal and non-verbal reasoning and creative writing; applicants joining other year groups may have individual assessments. The route is therefore age-specific, with the day-school and Sixth Form structure remaining consistent through the senior years.
