Marlborough College

Marlborough College began in 1843, founded by Church of England clergymen as a boarding school for the sons of clergy. Girls entered the Sixth Form in 1968 and full co-education followed in 1989. That history still shapes the present: long-standing boarding traditions sit alongside a co-educational senior community whose main years are 13 to 18, with the formal range extending from 13 to 19.

The boarding model is substantial. Six girls' houses and six boys' houses are joined by four houses combining younger boys with Sixth Form girls and boys, while a fully co-educational day house serves Years 9 to 13. In May 2026, sixteen boarding houses accommodated 997 boarders; work then under consideration concerned a capacity increase and new day house, rather than a general academic judgement.

The 286-acre campus is part of the experience, from the Gothic Revival chapel and Memorial Hall to university-quality sporting facilities and the Marlborough Mound, a Neolithic monument at the heart of the site. Academic work is accompanied by sport reaching later national competition stages, a symphony orchestra working with Sinfonia Smith Square and pupil exhibitions at the Mount House Gallery.

Admissions focus on 13+ and 16+ entry, with assessment days, pre-testing and entrance examinations. Scholarship programmes and bursary support include financial aid for pupils with potential. The result is a route where boarding choice, age of entry and assessment all matter, within a historic campus that combines formal tradition with a wide co-curricular life.
