Lord Wandsworth College began with the charitable bequest of Sydney Stern, Lord Wandsworth, to educate children of agricultural workers and children who had lost one or both parents. The first Foundationers arrived at the Hampshire site in 1922, followed by fee-paying pupils in 1946. That origin remains central to the College Foundation. Today this is a mixed school for ages 11 to 19 at Long Sutton near Hook, with day, flexi, weekly and full-boarding options.
The College describes its academic approach through A2RH: attitudes, approaches, routines and habits intended to develop a sustained approach to learning. In the senior years, setting varies by form and subject. For Sixth Form entry, the College says it offers A-levels and BTECs alongside individual attention, and its current admissions material sets out a combination of interview, academic assessment, predicted GCSE results and a school reference. Curriculum Support is available to pupils through small-group and one-to-one teaching.
Boarding is woven into the structure of the school. Every pupil belongs to a boarding house, including day pupils, so the houses provide a pastoral and social base as well as accommodation for boarders. The College has eight houses and describes around 130 clubs and activities in a typical year, spanning academic, creative, active, service and leadership opportunities. Its 1,200-acre setting includes Stern Farm, keeping the Foundation's agricultural history visible alongside the school buildings and outdoor space.
Admissions centre on Year 7, Year 9 and Sixth Form, with Year 8 and Year 10 applications also considered. The College says it typically welcomes around 60 pupils into Year 7, over 60 into Year 9 and a further Sixth Form cohort. Sixth Form applicants normally need at least six GCSEs at grade 5 or equivalent, preferably grade 7 in A-level subjects, before the interview and assessment process.
