Overview

The Latymer School is a co-educational selective grammar in Edmonton, North London, with about 1,374 pupils and roots stretching back to Edward Latymer's 1624 bequest to educate children in the area. Its motto, Qui Patitur Vincit, is usually rendered by the school as "Who endeavours wins", and that mix of old foundation and modern inclusive grammar is central to the school's identity.

Latymer's academic life is broad and demanding, with languages, STEM, humanities, arts, physical education, library provision and a sizeable sixth form. The co-curricular offer is one of its clearest strengths: around 50 clubs and societies run across the school, many student-led, alongside music, drama, sport, trips, activities and a traditional house system.

Year 7 admission is for 192 places and is limited to applicants living in the published Inner Area. Candidates sit mathematics, verbal reasoning and English; the first two are GL multiple-choice assessments and the English paper is school-set. Allocation is score-led, with published priority routes for looked-after children, Pupil Premium applicants and music aptitude.

Latymer is best read as a high-performing North London grammar with a strong foundation story and a very active student culture. Public measures record Ofsted Good, high Progress 8, 99% grade 5+ in English and maths, and a particularly strong sixth-form AAB figure.

Quick summary

  • Overall effectiveness: Rated Good overall, Latymer is described as a high-quality school where pupils aim high, work hard and feel safe. Inspectors praise personal development and the sixth form, while noting that curriculum thinking is less developed in a few subjects.
  • Quality of education: The curriculum is ambitious, with languages including German, Latin, Russian and French and near-universal English Baccalaureate study in Years 10 and 11. A few subjects need sharper sequencing so essential ideas deepen consistently over time.
  • Behaviour and attitudes: Pupils have a strong work ethic, attend extremely well and are polite and respectful. They behave well, want to learn, get on across year groups and trust staff to deal quickly with rare bullying.
  • Personal development: Personal development is a strength, with pupils active in a wide range of societies and clubs. They can develop musical and sporting talents, take part in chess and engineering, and are treated equally across the school.
  • Leadership and management: Leaders set high expectations and have robust safeguarding systems, including current training on harmful sexual behaviours and an anonymous reporting route for pupils. They also use PSHE to explore emerging local and national safety issues.
  • Sixth form provision: The sixth form is described as exceptional. Most pupils stay on, students respond eagerly to high expectations, study a demanding curriculum and typically progress to the university or apprenticeship route they have chosen.
