At a glance
The King's School in Harpenden is an independent Christian day school for children from age 4 to 16. It began in Hemel Hempstead in 1982 with 75 pupils and moved to Elmfield in 1987. Primary and secondary departments share one site, with Highfield Preschool nearby. The school accepts applicants from across the Christian community and describes small classes, close relationships and individual support as central to its work.
The curriculum broadly follows the National Curriculum through a biblical worldview. Assessment is continuous, with Year 6 Rising Stars assessments; GCSE courses begin at different points in Year 9. Options include English, mathematics, science, religious studies, languages, history, geography, art, music and PE. There is no in-house Sixth Form, so pupils normally move to local sixth forms and colleges at 16.
Daily life is described through character, practical as well as academic subjects and opportunities to contribute to the community. Admissions cover the Foundation Class, primary years and secondary Years 7 to 10; new Year 11 pupils are not normally accepted. The process uses an enquiry form, a meeting with the Headteacher and a tour. There is no formal entrance examination, although a visit may include benchmarking papers.
