King's College Taunton opened in 1880 as King Alfred's School, one of Nathaniel Woodard's schools. Girls joined the Sixth Form in 1968 and the school became fully co-educational in 1991. That history now sits within a senior day-and-boarding community whose principal entry point is Year 9.
Reading widely, asking searching questions and developing independent thought are central to the academic programme. Sixth Form students can take A levels, the EPQ or BTEC pathways in sport and business. International pupils have a pre-A-level route aligned with GCSE classes and English-language support, giving the final years more than one way into advanced study.
Six senior boarding houses, three for boys and three for girls, include day pupils as well as boarders. Charity, social and cultural events and inter-house activity shape house life, alongside CCF, the Duke of Edinburgh's Award, equestrian activity, Leiths cookery, sport, music and the arts. Joining at 13 or 16 involves registration, assessment, interview, a reference and GCSE conditions attached to an offer; day, weekly-boarding and full-boarding places are available.
