John Hales founded King Henry VIII School in Coventry in 1545 at the direction of King Henry VIII. That civic beginning remains visible in a school that now runs from Pre-Prep and Junior School through the Senior School and Sixth Form, and forms part of the Coventry School Foundation alongside Bablake School.
The curriculum widens as pupils move through the school. English and mathematics anchor the junior years, supported by science, French and Spanish, history, geography, religious education, art and design, music, drama, computing, PSHEE and physical education. Sixth Form students normally take three A Levels and can add the EPQ; subjects span sciences, mathematics, languages, humanities, law, psychology, philosophy, music, drama, business and sports science.
Sport, music, art, drama and outdoor education sit alongside community activity such as swimming lessons for primary schools, performances, local sports-club use and voluntary work across Coventry. Entry is organised by stage: Nursery or Reception, age seven, 11+, and later 12+, 13+ or 14+ places where available. Year 7 assessment uses English comprehension, English composition and mathematics, with reasoning and, at Year 9, science added. Sixth Form applicants provide a personal statement, attend interview and receive GCSE-conditional offers. Scholarships and bursaries are available; there is no boarding.
