Seven Hampstead parents met in 1897 and set in motion the society that founded The King Alfred School the following year. That beginning still helps explain its independent, co-educational character: the school now runs from Reception to Sixth Form as a day school, with a mixed 4-to-19 age range and no boarding.
Years 6 to 8 are shaped by term-long Explorations alongside single-subject lessons, Crew time and co-curricular activity. Year 9 marks the move towards GCSE, while Key Stage 4 combines GCSEs with school-directed courses. Sixth Form students can take A levels, the EPQ, or UAL Level 3 courses in performing and production arts and in music performance and production.
Older pupils move beyond the timetable through student council, peer-listening, sports-assistant and debate-leadership roles, alongside history, life drawing, debating, blacksmithing, rock band, orchestra and jazz band. Main entry points are Reception, Year 7 and Year 12, with occasional places in other years except Years 11 and 13. External Year 12 applicants provide information from their previous school, predicted GCSE results and a reference before interview, with a bursary route available.
