Ipswich High School

Woolverstone Hall and its 87-acre setting beside the River Orwell give Ipswich High School a strong sense of place. The school traces its history to 1878 and moved to the hall in 1992; today the all-through route combines day and boarding life from age 3 through the sixth form. Boarding can be full-time, weekly, flexi or occasional, with The Dairy House and The Barns providing the residential base.

Years 7 and 8 offer a broad sample of subjects before pupils choose areas to continue in Year 9 and then study for GCSEs in Years 10 and 11. The sixth form keeps the curriculum bespoke, usually with three or four A-level subjects and an Extended Project Qualification among the choices. Small classes, wellbeing work, peer mentoring and counselling sit alongside that academic progression.

The campus includes a theatre, ICT suites, a 25-metre pool, dedicated music rooms and sports facilities. Around 300 clubs and activities are embedded in the school day, so the large estate is used for more than lessons. Senior applications can include a tour, registration, a reference from the current school, a taster day and English and mathematics assessments; places may also be considered during the year.

Scholarships are available, while bursaries are not offered. The current school description gives the age range as 3-18, whereas the wider establishment information lists 3-19 with a sixth form and boarding. That distinction is worth checking with admissions alongside the assessment route and the residential arrangements.
