Overview

Highgate's story begins in 1565, when Sir Roger Cholmeley founded a grammar school at Highgate. Four centuries later it is a co-educational day school moving from pre-prep and junior years through senior school and sixth form. The 3-19 route has no boarding, and the school's North Road setting remains closely tied to Highgate Village.

Years 7 to 9 keep an unusually broad span of study: sciences sit beside French, Latin, another modern language, art, drama and music. Later choices lead to a sixth form with 29 A-level subjects. The academic character is not just about range; subject expertise is paired with scholarly independence, curiosity and a willingness to take intellectual risks.

Chapel, Central Hall and the Sir Martin Gilbert Library form part of the North Road campus, while the Mills Centre houses art, design, engineering and technology. Around 100 clubs and societies fill out the week with talks, debates, music, trips, outdoor education and sport.

Main entry points are 4+, 7+, 11+ and 16+, with occasional places in selected year groups. Applicants complete an online form and attend an assessment or interview. Means-tested bursaries are available at 7+, 11+ and 16+, including awards that can cover the full fee.
