Overview

A Royal Charter granted by Elizabeth I in 1572 gave Harrow School the foundation for the full-boarding community it is today. Around 830 boys aged 13 to 18 live and learn across a 324-acre estate with 12 boarding Houses, sports pitches, an observatory and a working farm. House life is the setting for friendship, competition and the close knowledge of pupils by staff.

Academic life begins with the Shell year in Year 9, a foundation programme spanning sciences, humanities, languages, mathematics, technology, music, art, drama and theology and philosophy. Boys then take a broad range of (I)GCSE subjects, including a modern language and at least two sciences, before choosing four A levels. The electives programme adds university-style courses beyond the A level timetable for older boys pursuing specialist interests.

The boarding model shapes the daily rhythm of lessons, games, societies, music, drama and weekend activities. Year 9 entry involves registration, a reference, the ISEB Common Pre-Test and a Harrow Test combining interview, English and Maths assessment and group activity. Sixth Form entry has its own testing route and timetable, so the point of entry is a significant part of the application.
