Overview

The Hammond's identity is built around specialist performing arts for pupils aged 11 to 16. Its history reaches back to a 1917 Chester fundraising concert that included choreography by Irene Hammond, while Hoole Bank became the home of The Hammond in 1969. The school offer remains distinct from the separate post-16 college and degree routes.

At school level, pupils choose Dance or Acting and Musical Theatre alongside their academic education. Dance training includes ballet, jazz, commercial, tap, modern, contemporary and choreography, with different emphases across Years 7 to 11. Acting and Musical Theatre combines acting, improvisation, voice, movement, singing, dance and musicianship, then develops those skills through devised and staged work.

Performance is part of both pathways. Dance pupils take part in an annual summer show, a choreography showcase, masterclasses and a London trip. Acting and Musical Theatre pupils perform a musical theatre production and a play each year. Boarding remains available, including for international pupils, although post-16 boarding is not currently provided.

Entry is through audition rather than an academic entrance examination. Dance applicants take ballet and modern or jazz classes; Acting and Musical Theatre applicants take performance workshops and prepare a monologue and song. A recent school report is required, auditions carry no charge, and Music and Dance Scheme funding is available for the 11-16 Dance course.
