Overview

Robert Aske's 1690 bequest created the foundation for Haberdashers' Boys' School, whose present community retains that long educational lineage while sharing a 100-acre Elstree campus with Habs Girls. Boys are taught in a single-sex setting, but the wider site supports collaboration between the two schools. The day-school community runs from age 4 to 18 and has no boarding.

In the Senior School, learning is active, practical and investigative, with discussion, debate and problem-solving across subjects. The curriculum is broad and flexible: pupils study languages, choose optional GCSE subjects and later take three or four A levels alongside the Habs Diploma. Academic societies, competitions, external speakers and extended research projects add depth beyond the ordinary timetable.

The day includes tutor time, an extended lunch and a large co-curricular programme. Sport, music, drama, trips, the Duke of Edinburgh's Award, Combined Cadet Force, Outdoor Education, community service, Model United Nations, robotics, chess and Classics Society are among the activities available. Houses, buddies, mentoring, a student council and prefect roles give pupils structured opportunities to contribute and take responsibility.

Admissions are managed directly at 4+, 7+, 11+, 13+ and 16+, with occasional places handled separately. Senior applicants sit written assessments and may be invited to interview; the 11+ route includes mathematics, non-verbal reasoning, English, verbal reasoning, creative comprehension and creative writing, while 13+ covers English, mathematics, humanities and science. Scholarships and means-tested bursaries are also available.
