Overview

James Carr completed Giggleswick's first school building in 1512, and a Royal Charter later established the Free Grammar School of King Edward VI. The present school has grown from that foundation into a co-educational community in Settle, with pre-school, prep, senior and Sixth Form stages. Co-education began in the Sixth Form in 1975, and boarding remains part of the school's character.

The senior curriculum moves from broad Years 7 to 9 study to GCSE or IGCSE in Year 11 and A levels or BTEC in the Sixth Form. Biology, chemistry and physics are taught separately in the earlier years, alongside languages, art, music, drama, design technology, ICT and religious studies. Small classes and House staff give the senior years a close pastoral structure.

Boarding is central but not compulsory. Giggleswick offers full, five-night and three-night flexi boarding, as well as day places. Boarding starts in Year 4 at junior Catteral House, with senior houses from Year 9, and day pupils belong to the House system too. The arrangement allows families to choose different levels of residence while remaining part of the same community.

Applications require reports, English and mathematics assessments, an interview and usually a taster day. Scholarships cover academic and creative areas, and the April 2026 inspection judged the relevant standards met. The school combines pre-school through Sixth Form with day, weekly and flexi boarding patterns.
