At a glance
FUEL is a referral-led re-engagement setting for 13- to 16-year-olds who cannot access mainstream education. It works with schools and local authorities around young people who have been permanently excluded, are at risk of exclusion, have no school place or have disengaged from education. That makes its purpose distinct from a conventional open-enrolment senior school.
Personalised education plans combine academic study with vocational qualifications. Key Stage 4 options include Level 1 and Level 2 routes, including industry-recognised courses, while limited group sizes, qualified mentors and one-to-one support keep the programme closely tailored. Life-skills guidance and careers advice are part of the offer, with bespoke packages available for pupils with additional learning needs.
There is no sixth form, so the focus remains on Key Stages 3 and 4 and on the next step beyond them. Progression can mean reintegration into mainstream education, further education, employment, an apprenticeship or training. The May 2025 outcome was Good; safeguarding was effective, and behaviour and attitudes were positive. FUEL also operates a community site at Melbourne Park alongside its Haydn Road base.
