Freshsteps Independent school

Freshsteps is built around a personalised route for pupils with Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs and Education, Health and Care Plans. Its provision runs from primary through Sixth Form, using practical education to help young people rebuild confidence and take part in learning at a suitable pace. The setting is specialist rather than a conventional open-entry school, and there are no boarders.

Primary learning gives priority to phonics, reading, writing and numeracy. In the secondary years, English, Mathematics, Science, ICT, Design and Technology, PE and PSHE are combined with interventions and functional-skills qualifications; GCSEs in core subjects can be available. Therapies, trained staff and small personalised environments shape the support around each pupil.

Horse-riding, boxing, multi-sports and practical Design and Technology bring physical and applied learning into the week. Careers education, work experience and Sixth Form courses connect the academic programme with life beyond school. The March 2024 outcome was Outstanding.

Places are accessed through referral rather than a standard admissions form. A local-authority SEN service, referring school or alternative-provision setting sends the EHCP for SENCo review, and a two- to four-day trial may follow. The decision depends on need, staffing and safety, with the headteacher making the final decision.
