Felsted's story begins in 1564 with Richard Lord Riche, but its current character comes from the combination of a large working campus and a close house community. Prep and Senior pupils share the 90-acre setting, with day and boarding routes from early years through Sixth Form. Co-education has been part of the modern school for decades, alongside an international community.
The academic journey runs from early years through GCSE and into A levels or the International Baccalaureate. Small classes support a culture in which pupils are expected to take responsibility for learning. At GCSE, English, mathematics and science form the core before pupils choose from languages, classics, history, drama, music, design technology and computer science.
Houses, playing fields, theatre, music school and specialist facilities shape the week beyond lessons. Boarding is available from age nine with full, weekly and more flexible arrangements, while day pupils take part in the longer school day and house-based community. More than 30 nationalities contribute to the character of the school, and the modern co-educational tradition is well established.
Admissions are made directly to Felsted, with entry points including ages 3, 4, 7, 11, 13 and 16. Year 9 applicants may take adaptive tests in mathematics, English comprehension, verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning, followed by interview and reference. Sixth Form entry uses assessment, interview and stated GCSE requirements; the December 2023 inspection judged the relevant standards met.
