Overview

Founded by Henry VI in 1440 to educate 70 King's Scholars, Eton College remains a boys' boarding school. It serves boys aged 12 to 19, with King's Scholars living in College and others in boarding houses. The founding purpose informs the model: a residential education shaped by scholarship, tradition and an effort to widen access through financial support.

Eton describes an academic curriculum of 28 subjects, including nine Modern and Classical Languages, taught by subject specialists. Learning support begins with an arrival assessment and can continue throughout a boy's time at the College. Music, sport and drama sit alongside the CCF, volunteering, debating, bridge, climbing and many societies. Boarding houses give pupils a daily community in which older boys help welcome new arrivals.

Entry is managed directly by Eton. For the main 13+ route, registration closes at the end of UK School Year 5, followed by the College's assessment process; Common Entrance, the Eton Entrance Exam, King's Scholarship and Sixth Form entry are also supported. Scholarships and means-tested bursaries are separate: Eton reports fee reductions for 247 boys in 2023/24, including 99 who paid no fees, while the King's Scholarship is awarded on academic merit and does not itself guarantee fee remission.
